This morning, we were woken up by a call from the hotel night guard:
“Baby turtles are hatching on the beach!!!”
It was easy to jump out of bed and rush down to the hotel to witness this magical moment! Even after 10 years in Hikkaduwa, I never get tired of it. 🐢💚
When we arrived, we found only 10 tiny baby turtles. They had gotten stuck in the vegetation near the neighbouring plot and were heading the wrong way—away from the ocean! Most likely, the rest of their siblings had already hatched and made it to the sea earlier in the evening or during the night.
To give these little ones a chance, we carefully placed them in a bucket and helped them closer to the water’s edge. It was important for them to get into the ocean quickly before birds or stray dogs on the beach became a threat. 🦅🐕
We made sure all 10 safely reached the waves. Now, the rest is up to them—out there in the big blue! 💙🌊🐢✨

Hikkaduwa is known for its sea turtle population, and if you’re lucky, you might witness this incredible event during your stay. It’s a reminder of the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting these fragile marine creatures.
